Dr. Kowalewski is renowned as a language educator with more than 40 years of service to his students and discipline. He received his Associate of Arts from Shasta College in 1976, he subsequently graduated from Amherst College with a Bachelor of Arts in English, magna cum laude, in 1978. Dr. Kowalewski concluded his studies at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, earning a Master of Arts in 1982 and a Doctor of Philosophy in English in 1986.
From 1986 to 1991, Dr. Kowalewski taught as an Assistant Professor at Princeton University. He moved to Carleton College in 1991, where he was an Assistant Professor of English from 1991 to 1995, an Associate Professor from 1995 to 2001 and a professor from 2001 to 2008. In 2008, Dr. Kowalewski was named the Lloyd McBride Professor of English and Environmental Studies.
Dr. Kowalewski was the Director of Carleton's Program in American Studies from 2001 to 2004. He was the Chair of the Carleton English Department from 2007-2010. He has been an active member of Carleton's Program in Environmental Studies for over a quarter of a century. He is also the creator of Carleton's "Visions of California" off-campus studies seminar, which he has directed since 1995.
Dr. Kowalewski is the author or editor of several books, including "Deadly Musings: Violence and Verbal Form in American Fiction" in 1993, "Reading the West: New Essays on the Literature of the American West" in 1996 and "Gold Rush: A Literary Exploration" (1997), which won an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History. His essays and reviews have appeared in more than twenty periodicals. Dr. Kowalewski is a long-time member of the Modern Language Association, the Sierra Club, the California Historical Society, the Book Club of California and the Western Literature Association. He served as President of the Western Literature Association in 1999. He has been awarded several research grants over the years from Princeton University, Carleton College and the American Council of Learned Societies.
