She previously held teaching appointments at Central Michigan University, the University of Washington, the University of Puget Sound and the University of Montana. Additionally, Dr. Stewart Powell taught and served as the head of the science department at Üsküdar Amerikan Lisesi, a private coeducational high school in Istanbul, Turkey, between 1958 and 1962.
Dr. Stewart Powell discovered her passion for teaching shortly after graduating high school, after which she worked for a brief time as a teacher's assistant. Enjoying the experience, she decided to pursue education in college, and after graduating, began instructing several courses at the University of Washington. Throughout her extensive career in biology, Dr. Stewart Powell conducted a wealth of research in her field, and notably contributed to many scholarly articles in various scientific journals.
Dr. Stewart Powell received both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science at the College of Puget Sound in 1948 and 1949, respectively. Pursuing additional studies, she subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Washington in 1953. To remain aware of developments effecting her profession, she maintained her alignment with such organizations as the American Physiological Society and the honorable society of Sigma Xi.
