In the course of his 35 years as a professor, Dr. Phillips authored numerous research articles that were published in referred journals, and he supervised the graduate work of over 30 students.
APACHE JUNCTION, AZ, June 19, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James Phillips, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Phillips was born Globe, AZ, in 1938, and he resided there for the next 18 years, graduating from Globe High School. He attended the University of Arizona where he graduated with distinction in September, 1960. He was accepted into the Psychology graduate program at Southern Illinois University where he received a Master's degree in 1962 and his doctorate in 1964. His dissertation was awarded an honorable mention among all psychology dissertations in 1964. After a NIMH funded post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University, in 1966 he accepted the position of Assistant Professor at Michigan State University. In 1969 he was promoted to Associate Professor, and in 1975 he attained the position of Full Professor. Over his 12 years at MSU he held positions in the Department of Psychology, the Human Learning Research Institute, and the Computer Institute for Social Science Research where he attained the position of Director. He also served as an assistant dean in the College of Social Sciences.
In 1978, Dr. Phillips left Michigan State to assume the position of Psychology Department Chairman at Oklahoma State University, a position he held for 8 years, after which he resumed his prior roles of teaching and research. During that period, he once again enjoyed being away from administrative duties. He was able to focus on working with great number of students. He was honored in 1994 by being named Psychology Teacher of the Year. Dr. Phillips retired in 1996 and returned to his beloved Arizona along with his wife, Nancy, of 40 years. Together they built a house in Apache Junction with a great view of the Superstition Mountains, thus remedying a long suffering mountain deprivation. Both continued to be actively engaged in community activities. Jim served as the Senior Warden of a church in East Mesa, and Nancy served as the Sunday School Superintendent. Together they worked to establish the Globe High School Alumni Association, and were actively involved in the creation of the Globe High School Hall of Fame.
