After graduating from Boston College in 1949 with a Bachelor's degree in philosophy Edward joined the Jesuit Order. In addition to his Jesuit training he received a Master of Arts in philosophy from Boston College, a Master of Arts in physics from Harvard University, a Doctor of Philosophy in physics from St. Louis University, a Licentiate in Theology from Weston College, where he was ordained as a Catholic priest, and spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow in Yale's philosophy department. In 1965 he joined the Boston College philosophy department, where he advanced from Assistant to full Professor in five years. In 1970 he quit the Jesuit Order, the Catholic Church, and Boston College. He accepted a position as a philosophy professor at California State University East Bay and retired in 1997.
In addition to his primary academic duties, Dr. MacKinnon also offered his expertise as an author. His published work includes "Scientific Realism," "Truth and Expression," "Scientific Explanation and Atomic Physics," "Basic Reasoning," "Interpreting Physics" and "The Relevance of Philosophy." He has also contributed 85 articles to professional journals in philosophy, physics, history of science, and theology. He was active on the governing board of the Philosophy of Science Association, as well as on different committees of the American Philosophical Association. He is currently an editor of the Philosophy Forum and a reviewer for Philosophy of Science, Foundations of Physics, Foundations of Science, and Isis.
In 1972 Dr. MacKinnon married Dr. Barbara Bacon, a professor of philosophy at the University of San Francisco and a very successful author. They are the proud parents of two daughters, Jennifer, a physical oceanography professor at the University of California San Diego, and Kathleen.
