Drawing upon decades of expertise and a lifelong love of music, Mr. Levin serves as professor emeritus at Harvard University and visiting Professor at The Juilliard School. Previously, he gained valuable educational experience in visiting, associate and professorial roles with The Curtis Institute of Music, the State University of New York at Purchase, and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. Throughout his career, he has had the honor of participating in solo and group performances all around the world. As a performer, Mr. Levin has played piano and fortepiano with the Berlin, Los Angeles and Vienna Philharmonics, the Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Melbourne and NHK Tokyo Symphony Orchestras, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.
Mr. Levin is renowned for Mozart and Beethoven performances incorporating cadenzas and embellishments improvised afresh at each concert. His repertoire spans the 16th-20th centuries. For many years, Mr. Levin has collaborated with a plethora of conductors, including James Conlon, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Bernard Haitink, Christopher Hogwood, Nicholas McGegan, Sir Roger Norrington, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Simon Rattle, Helmuth Rilling, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and David Zinman.
Apart from his performances, Mr. Levin has composed two clarinet sonatas, a piano quartet, a woodwind quintet, and a bassoon sonata in addition to a number of completions to unfinished works by Bach, Mozart (notably the Requiem and the C-minor mass), Beethoven, and Schubert. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from Harvard University in 1968. Subsequently, Mr. Levin became designated as the first Hogwood Fellow of the Academy of Ancient Music.
Mr. Levin is a member of the American Academy of Musicological Society, the American Academy of Arts & Letters and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, he has authored or co-authored more than forty publications, including "Who Wrote the Mozart Four-Wind Concertante?" "Sightsinging and Ear Training Through Literature," "Mozart and the Keyboard Culture of His Time," "Mozart's Speculative Voice: The Metaphysics of Composition in the First Movement of the Piano Quartet in E-flat, K. 493" and "Performance Prerogatives in Schubert." His discography includes over 100 recordings. Although his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Levin is especially proud of attending the world premiere performance of his competition to Mozart's Requiem in Stuttgart, Germany in 1991, as the standing ovation he received is a moment he will remember for the rest of his life.
In recognition of his outstanding body of work, Mr. Levin has been honored many times, accepting honorary doctorates from the Curtis Institute of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. He was also presented with Grammy Award nominations in the late 1980s and late 1990s, features in publications such as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in Fine Arts Higher Education and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, and inclusion into the Millennium Hall of Fame in 1998. More recently, he was awarded the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig, Germany, in 2018. Mr. Levin looks forward to continued activity as performer and scholar.
