Dr. McCune has been renowned as a professor emerita of microbiology at Idaho State University (ISU) since 2001. Her long and distinguished career on campus began in 1970, and has notably included chairing the faculty senate between 1994 and 1995. She obtained Eisenhower Funds for workshops for K-12 teachers for several years. Her extensive background in academia included former teaching appointments at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, the University of California Davis and Occidental College in Los Angeles. Dr. McCune also worked in the field as an assistant research bacteriologist at the University of California at Los Angeles, a research technician for the VA Hospital in Oakland, California, and a bacteriologist for the U.S. Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory in San Francisco.
In retirement, Dr. McCune has been engaged in volunteer work with the Portneuf Medical Center since 2002. She was notably appointed as the president of the auxiliary between 2017 and 2018. Additionally, Dr. McCune found success as a moderator for Kendall Presbyterian Women between 2004 and 2007 and the president of the AK chapter of PEO in Pocatello. Since 1970 she has been a member and past president of the Idaho State University Women's Club.
Initially, Dr. McCune earned a bachelor's degree from Montana State University in 1953. Obtaining a master's degree at Washington State University in 1955, she graduated from Purdue University with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1965 as a Davis Ross fellow. Furthermore, Dr. McCune completed supplementary postdoctoral research at the University of California Los Angeles between 1969 and 1970. Aligned with several professional organizations, Dr. McCune is a member, past secretary, vice-president, and president of the Intermountain Branch of the American Society for Microbiology. She is also affiliated with the Idaho Academy of Science as a member, a former trustee and a former vice president and president. A board member of the Idaho Education Alliance for Science, Dr. McCune has been a member since 1955 of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Among other organizations, Dr. McCune was selected as a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society. In 1975, she was recognized as an Outstanding Alumna by the Association of Women Students at Montana State University.
