He previously found success as an associate section chief with the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland from 1972 until 1976. Following this appointment, Dr. Shoemaker worked between 1976 until 1984 at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, whereupon he joined the faculty of the University of Connecticut.
In addition to Dr. Shoemaker's commitments at the university, he consulted on research programs at various other institutions. As a seasoned researcher in his field, he has contributed chapters to books and articles to numerous peer reviewed journals. Dr. Shoemaker is currently in the process of writing his own book about the origin of evil and the social brain network, which deals with brain lesions that are present in psychopaths. A dedicated civic advocate, he often contributed to several organizations relative to his community, such as the Unitarian Society of Hartford, where he has served as a member of its leadership group. He is also active with the Institute of Religion in the Age of Science as an officer.
Born in Boston, Dr. Shoemaker first became fascinated with the sciences while coming of age. Deciding to study locally after high school, he was accepted to the University of Massachusetts, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in zoology in 1964. Dr. Shoemaker concluded his academic efforts at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from which he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 1971.
