Having accrued more than 45 years of inimitable expertise in the field of optical physics, Dr. Zhang earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus at Georgia Southern University in 2017. He holds a Bachelor of Science in quantum electronics from Peking University, and attended the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, from which he earned a Master of Science in quantum electronics in 1981, and a Doctor of Philosophy in atomic and optical physics in 1986 through an on-the-job PhD program (1982-1986). Zhang pursued additional postdoctoral trainings at the University of California at Berkeley in 1990, after which he continued his profession in teaching and research in the US.
After graduation from Peking University, Dr. Zhang served as a staff member at Shanxi Construction Machinery Factory in Xi'an, China from1970 until 1976. He excelled further as a research associate in Quantum-electronics at Peking University between 1976 and 1978, and then joined the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1981 as a lecturer in physics after receiving his MS degree. Rising to become an associate professor in 1987 after receiving his Ph.D. Dr. Zhang visited University of Stirling and University of Manchester as a visiting professor and a visiting fellow of the Royal Society of London. He joined the faculty of Georgia Southern University in 1990 as an associate professor of physics and then became a tenured full professor in 1994, where he continued to teach and research until his retirement in 2017.
Extensively well-traveled, Dr. Zhang has earned distinction as an honorary professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and as a visiting professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, ROC. A prolific author, he has published more than 180 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals such as Physics Review Letters, Applied Physics Letters, Journal of the American Optical Society, Optics Letters, and Optics Express. Dr. Zhang is a grantee of many research grants from the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health, and is the recipient of a Second Prize in Research from CAS in 1986, a Fok Ying Tong Outstanding Youth Award of the Ministry of Education of China in 1986 and a 1996 Excellence in Research Award from the Georgia Southern Foundation. He is a member of American Optical Society.
