Now retired from a tenured career as a secondary school teacher and coach, Ms. Lehmann-Carssow was aligned with Lanier High School in the Austin Independent School District for 40 years. She garnered a laudable reputation as a world geography teacher, instructional specialist and partner in education representative, and likewise coached girls' tennis between 1974 and 1997, as well as girls' wrestling from 1999 to 2007. Presently, Ms. Lehmann-Carssow has worked as a tour guide, mainly in Africa, since 1974.
Ms. Lehmann-Carssow has drawn a wealth of inspiration from her father, Val W. Lehmann, who distinguished himself as a wildlife conservationist for many years and notably received the highest conservation award that the government bestows. Throughout her career, she has also served in various other professional roles, including as a presenter for Population Education, an area representative for World Encounters in Austin and a consultant to National Geographic. A prolific writer, Ms. Lehmann-Carssow has been involved in the publishing of two books, "Bobwhites" in which she served as the photographer, and "Creative Teaching Strategies for World Geography" as co-author.
A leader in her community, Ms. Lehmann-Carssow co-chaired PeaceWorks, is a life member of Hostelling International USA in Austin and is the former vice president of the North Austin Civic Association. As an activist, she was responsible for distributing polio vaccines to Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana in 2009 and 2017, 10,000 mosquito nets in Togo in 2012 and numerous solar lights throughout Belize in 2014. Ms. Lehmann-Carssow also helped to finance the rebuilding of the Rehema Orphanage and School in the Korogocho slum outside Nairobi, Kenya, between 2019 and 2020.
Ms. Lehmann-Carssow is a graduate of the University of Texas where she acquired both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in 1971 and 1979, respectively. She also completed additional studies at the University of Nairobi, Texas A&I, Kingsville, Kenya Science Teacher's College, Hebrew University and George Washington University. She was a Fulbright Scholar to Israel in 1983. To support her career in education, Ms. Lehmann-Carssow has been an active member of the National Education Association. She is a life member of several organizations as well, including the National Council for Geographic Education, the Texas Parent Teacher Association, the Fulbright Alumni Association, and the University of Texas Ex-Students' Association. Additionally, Ms. Lehmann-Carssow is a past president of Northwest Austin Rotary and Delta Kappa Gamma, as well as a participant of Earthwatch, where she had notably participated in the 1984 archaeological dig in Swaziland and the 2003 archaeological dig in Romania.
Securing several grants, including to Malaysia and Indonesia in 1990, Ms. Lehmann-Carssow also received several awards and recognitions for a myriad of contributions to her discipline. Some of her teaching recognitions include a Creative Teaching Award from the Austin Association of Teachers in 1978 and an Excellence Award for Outstanding High School Teacher from the University of Texas in 1997. Other accolades to her credit include a Merit Award from the National Council of Geography Education in 1975, the Education's Unsung Heroes Award from Northern Life in 1998, a Peacemaker Award from the Austin Dispute Resolution Center in 1998, and a Distinguished Service Award from the Rotary Foundation in 2018. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Lehmann-Carssow has been featured in approximately 25 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who of American Women and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
