Having practiced medicine for more than 40 years, Dr. Mandel has garnered a laudable reputation as a cardiologist with the Cardiovascular Medical Group of Southern California, notably specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of complex arrhythmias. He has also been a professor of medicine adjunct in the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles since 1982. Prior to assuming his current position with the Medical Group, Dr. Mandel earned distinction as the director of clinical electrophysiology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
An expert in both arrhythmias and electrophysiology, Dr. Mandel has been widely published as a result of his years of research. In addition to contributing over 350 scholarly articles and abstracts to professional journals, he has authored more than 35 book chapters and three editions of a medical textbook, "Cardiac Arrhythmias." He has also been active on the editorial boards for several prominent scientific journals. Moreover, Dr. Mandel has participated at over 150 symposia during his professional career and continues to present routine international lectures.
Dr. Mandel studied at the University of Virginia, acquiring a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1958. He then attended Downstate Medical Center where he completed his medical degree in 1962. Additional educational pursuits include an internship and residency, where he served to chief resident, at Downstate Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology and pharmacology at Columbia University in the College of Physicians and Surgeons. While completing his residency work, Dr. Mandel served to captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army between 1964 and 1966. He is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology.
An elected fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society, Dr. Mandel is also a fellow and member of the council of clinical cardiology of the American Heart Association. Named to several professional medical publications for his expertise, such as Best Doctors of America, America's Top Physicians and America's Top Cardiologists, he is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been featured in the 21st edition of Who in the West. Outside of his vocational circles, Dr. Mandel enjoys such diversions as playing golf and international travel.
