Devoted to the organization for nearly three decades, he served as the vice president, chief technical officer, co-founder and member of the board of directors. Commencing his career with Philco Corporation in Pennsylvania as an engineer in 1956, he later held roles with the Xerox Corporation in New York and KMS Fusion Inc. in Ann Arbor before co-founding SoloHill in 1984. During the length of his illustrious career, Dr. Hillegas also notably co-founded SoloHill Engineering Inc. and SoloHill Therapeutics Inc.
Dr. Hillegas is an expert in various areas of materials science, as well as physics, chemistry and semiconductors. He holds several patents in his field, including a high sensitivity visible-infrared photoconductor, a roller bottle system and collagen coated microcarrier beads. He has notably disseminated much of his research in over 25 articles for various scientific journals. Aligned as a member of several industry-related organizations, Dr. Hillegas is currently aligned with the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Involved with his local community and church while living in New York, Dr. Hillegas served as a county committee member for the Democratic Committee of Monroe County in Rochester, New York, between 1971 and 1978. An alumnus of Drexel Institute of Technology, he received a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1960. Dr. Hillegas later attended Northwestern University where he completed both a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science in 1967 and 1968, respectively.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Hillegas was able to secure several grants from the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Small Business Innovation Research, the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He also received several grants from the Michigan State Research Fund and the U.S. Navy. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Hillegas has been included in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the Midwest, and is a member of Tau Beta Pi, The Engineering Honor Society.
