In 1987, the American Board of Internal Medicine recognized Dr. Frank Rivas with The Advanced Achievement in Internal Medicine Award.

Having accrued more than 50 years of distinction in his field, Dr. Rivas has garnered a laudable reputation as an exemplary Cardiologist and Educator. He attended LaSalle College, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1958, and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine at the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1964. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Rivas is a diplomate of the American Board of Cardiology and holds a lifetime certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

From 1965 until 1966, Dr. Rivas earned distinction as a fellow in Hypertension at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He was subsequently recognized as a fellow in Adult Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania between 1966 and 1967 and Temple University from 1967 to 1968. Dr. Rivas completed additional fellowships in Cardiology at the University of Florida and in Cardiac Catheterization and Coronary Arteriography at Saint Vincent Hospital in Cleveland. From 1970 until 1971, Dr. Rivas found success as a fellow in Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Kansas, and he completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University as a requirement of the American Board of Internal Medicine to become Board Certified in Cardiology. Subsequently, he was named senior fellow in Cardiology at Duke University in 1973. In addition, from 1973 to 1975, Dr. Rivas also conducted research in heart and coronary circulation at Duke University.

Dr. Rivas maintained activity as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at the Medical College of Georgia in 1975, and joined the VA Medical Center of Augusta the same year. He served as a Hemodynamist and the Director of the Coronary Circulation Research Laboratory at the VA Medical Center of Augusta until 1979.

As a researcher, Dr. Rivas served on the research committee of the Georgia Heart Association. In addition, he also became active in the American Federation for Clinical Research. Dr. Rivas was also honored to become a member of the Sigma Xi, the Scientific and Honor Society as well as the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Rivas' research in heart and coronary circulation has been published in many scientific peer-reviewed journals including Circulation, Journal of American College of Cardiology, American Journal of Physiology, Chest, and Circulation Research.

In 1979, he transferred to the Huntington VA Medical Center, where he served as Chief of Cardiology until 1981. He distinguished himself further as an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Chair of Cardiology at the Marshall University School of Medicine from 1979 to 1981, when he entered private practice specializing in Cardiology and Cardiac Catheterization.

While in private practice, Dr. Rivas has continued being very active, with Fellow status, in numerous scientific organizations pertinent to his career interests: Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Fellow of the American Heart Association, Fellow of the College of Chest Physicians, and Fellow of the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Intervention, and Fellow of the Duke University Cardiology Society. He also served the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) in the Section for Vascular Disease. In addition, he became Board Certified in Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (CVCT) shortly after completing training in CVCT at Johns Hopkins.

Since he started private practice, Dr. Rivas has received recurrent biographical recognitions for his work in Cardiology, in Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World, both internationally respected biographical publications.

In 1987, the American Board of Internal Medicine recognized Dr. Rivas with The Advanced Achievement in Internal Medicine Award.

People and factors that influenced the personal and professional life of Dr. Rivas include the following: his parents, Emma Martinez Rivas Lazaro and Dr. Francisco Rivas Lazaro, and his wife Carole Miller Rivas, who modeled for him a passion and respect for diversity and the sanctity of life; Dr. Eugene A. Stead Jr. (Duke University), world-renowned giant of medicine, who taught that a medical professional has a double mission: to restore the health of patients and find answers to the societal ailments threatening people's health (unequal access to and lack of consistent quality of medical care for all people); Dr. Joseph C. Greenfield, Jr. (Duke University), highly respected medical researcher whose work epitomizes what researchers should strive for in originality and integrity; Dr. Edward Shapiro (Director of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center) and his associate Dr. David Bush, whose excellent teaching program, encouragement, devotion, and warm friendship made it possible for Dr. Rivas to become Board Certified in CVCT.

Dr. Rivas believes that his Christian faith has made it possible for him to provide the same level of empathy and care to all patients, regardless of their wide variety of temperaments and backgrounds.

Dr. Rivas was privileged to receive two great civic honors, both very dear to his heart: being invited by the Synagogue in Huntington, WV, to read aloud the names of brothers and sisters, mothers and children, victims of the Jewish Holocaust, one of the saddest and darkest pages of modern history; becoming a citizen of the United States of America, lighthouse of hope to the whole world, for equal human rights and opportunities for all.
