Having accrued more than 53 years of inimitable experience in the field of internal medicine and nephrology, Dr. Materson has garnered a laudable reputation acting chief of medicine at the University of Miami Medical Group. Aligned with the VA Medical Center in Miami between 1967 and 1995, he notably held several key positions, including as the associate chief of staff of education. Acquired by the University of Miami Medical Group as the medical director for managed care in 1995, Dr. Materson distinguished himself as an expert in risk avoidance. He subsequently served as the director of the self-insurance program and a physician liaison before assuming his current role.

During his illustrious career in medicine, Dr. Materson also taught for many years. Having earned the distinguished title of an emeritus professor of medicine at the University of Miami in the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, his four-decade career on campus began in 1968 as an instructor. He rose through the ranks to tenured associate professor in 1974 and professor in 1983. During his tenure, Dr. Materson was a member of the editorial boards and scientific reviewer for many journals. He was the chairperson of the pharmacy and therapy review committee between 1987 and 2003. He has continued to perform research in the Clinical Pharmacology Research Unit of the Division of Pharmacology.

Following his fellowship in nephrology, he secured a research grant from the VA. The grant ended in 1971 and he remained at the VA as a staff physician, chief of the hypertension clinic and assistant chief of the medical service. He joined the VA Cooperative Study Group on Antihypertensive Agents and was mentored by Dr. Edward D. Freis. He co-chaired and later chaired many studies with that group. He later became a member of the committee that published The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7), a group of subcommittees that collaborate and review hypertension scientific literature that has been gathered from clinical trials, epidemiology and behavioral science, between 2002 and 2003. Dr. Materson is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was a secretary of the American Society of Hypertension, a member of the high blood pressure research council of the American Heart Association and a member of the International Society of Hypertension.

Renowned for his research, which includes decades of study in hypertension, Dr. Materson specifically focused on single-drug therapy of hypertension. He also studied the condition by race and age interactions as contributing factors of response to antihypertensive drug therapy and combination therapy. The main paper was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Additionally, he studied low-dose captopril, low dose diuretics and antihypertensive agents regarding beta-adrenergic blocking agents as possible first line therapy. A prolific author, Dr. Materson has contributed over 30 books, including "Hypertension" in 1989 and "Cardiovascular Drug Therapy" in 1990, as well as over 180 articles in various scholarly journals.

An alumnus of the University of Miami, Dr. Materson received a Bachelor of Science, a Doctor of Medicine and a Master of Business Administration in health care in 1959, 1962 and 1993, respectively. Dr. Materson interned at Los Angeles County Hospital. He was offered a promotion to Resident but chose to return to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. He served only two months before being inducted into the U.S. Air Force Medical Corp. He was sent to Aerospace Medical School and qualified for flying status and a Flight Medical Officer. Between the interruption of his residency and reporting for active duty, he was able to marry and enjoy a short honeymoon. He was able to fly in 13 types of aircraft, go supersonic and ascend to 55,000 feet. When his tour of duty was complete he and his wife returned to Miami where he completed the remainder of his residency and fellowship in nephrology. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Materson is a certified specialist in hypertension through the American Society of Hypertension and is a diplomate of the American Board of Nephrology and the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Well-regarded as a leading light in his field, Dr. Materson was notably bestowed with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Consortium of Southeastern Hypertension Control. Moreover, he was inducted into the Miami Beach Senior High School Hall of Fame in 2018.
