Since 2008, he has represented both individuals and businesses who have been subjected to investigations and/or prosecutions by a variety of governmental authorities such as the New York State Attorney General's Office and the U.S. Attorney's Office. Before his position with Schlam Stone & Dolan, Mr. Russo gained valuable expertise in the field as the first deputy commissioner for the New York City Department of Investigation and an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
As assistant attorney, Mr. Russo was appointed as the chief of the Official Corruption/Special Prosecution Section, in which he investigated and prosecuted complex financial crimes and supervised federal prosecutors during high profile cases. During the earliest years of his career, he worked as an attorney with Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett and a law clerk for senior associate Judge Adrian P. Burke of the New York State Court of Appeals. Due to his considerable expertise, Mr. Russo has also served as an adjunct professor of law at Brooklyn Law School, specializing in trial advocacy.
In the late 1960s, Mr. Russo earned a Bachelor of Arts from St. Bonaventure University. Subsequently, he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the School of Law at St. John's University in 1973. Over the years, he was admitted to practice law through the New York State Bar Association, the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States. He remains aware of changes in the field through his affiliation with the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, with which he has been recruited on several standing and ad hoc committees since the mid-1970s. Mr. Russo is also a founding member of the New York Council of Criminal Defense Lawyers, in which he remains active as a member of the board of directors, and serves as a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
