MORGANTOWN, WV, July 27, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Edward C. Keller III has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Keller garnered a laudable reputation K-12 educator who retired after more than 25 years of classroom experience, having accrued a proven record of excellence in developing instructional materials. Coming of age with a parent in academia, his family moved frequently, and he struggled both academically and socially. The frequent relocations left gaps in his education, and he did not learn to read until junior high, but was creative enough to persevere for several years. Inspired by his own inconsistent school experiences and dedicated to providing students with more support than he had received, Mr. Keller decided to pursue a career in education. He attended West Virginia University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in secondary education in 1976, and a Master of Arts in science education in 1985.
In 1976, Mr. Keller began his career teaching science at Sabraton Junior High, departing in 1980 to teach at South Junior High, where he would remain until 1988. He taught science at the elementary level in 1988 as a staff member at Second Ward Elementary, and at Mountainview Elementary from 1991 until 1995. In 1995, Mr. Keller excelled as a science teacher at Morgantown High School, where he continued to work with students until his retirement in 2002. Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Keller was the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding educational work, including a 1986 National Science Foundation Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, a 1990 Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awardee and several accolades from the West Virginia Department of Education. Mr. Keller is most proud of being named to the West Virginia University College of Human Resources & Education Hall of Fame, an honor he shares with his father.
In addition to his classroom work, Mr. Keller spent six summers involved with a grant from the National Science Foundation's Young Scholars Program specifically targeted for students with disabilities developing materials and teaching in the areas of marine, estuarine, and coastal environments. Later, Mr. Keller spent another four summers teaching over 150 West Virginia classroom teachers the principles of geology and the geology of West Virginia (in conjunction with the West Virginia Economic and Geological Survey) in a project funded by the National Science Foundation. Based on his experiences Mr. Keller authored several papers and case studies on adaptive teaching methods and educational outcomes for students with disabilities. He presented his research at dozens of national and regional education conferences, including eight annual National Science Teachers Association Conventions, and by invitation of the State of West Virginia. Since his retirement, Mr. Keller has focused on writing and developing a jewelry and metalsmithing practice. He wrote "Clare's Tomato" in 2016, which is a book for young readers, and aspires to publish more in the coming years.
