Prudence retired as an elementary school teacher in the Center Area School District (now Central Valley) in Monaca, Pennsylvania in 1999 after 34 years of outstanding service. For 19 years she taught gifted students. She was the first teacher in Beaver County to implement Individual Education Program Plans (IEP) as mandated by the state of PA. She functioned as the school district's Director of Special Education. She served as an elementary curriculum coordinator for the district. Miss Peya enjoyed coaching her students in Odyssey of the Mind, a creative thinking competition. She served as a sponsor for the Beaver County Academic Games League, a nonprofit organization that conducts academic competitions at the local, state, and national levels for students in grades four through twelve. Miss Peya wrote a handbook for gifted education: Instructional Areas Appropriate for Gifted Students in 1987. She also had an article published in "Challenge" magazine entitled, "Personality Boxes."
Born in Rochester, PA, Miss Peya was a 1961 graduate of Aliquippa High School. Her degrees from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, include a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1965, a M.Ed., in Special Education in 1967, and a M.S. in Elementary Administration and Supervision in 1977. Miss Peya is a past president of the Beaver County Gifted Teachers Organization. Miss Peya was an active member of the Pennsylvania Association for Gifted Education (PAGE) where she was recognized as Elementary Gifted Teacher of the Year on the state level in 1984. She was also honored by the Center Area PTA and the Greek Catholic Union on the district level for her exemplary contributions in education. She was nominated three times by the principal for Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year sponsored by the Department of Education. She was also a KDKA Thanks to Teachers nominee.
Miss Peya is a current member and past president of the Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for outstanding women educators.
