As a child Dr. Rokke was inspired by his science teacher, who inspired his fascination with science and physics, in particular. He subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was selected as a bomb navigation hard hat where he repaired, maintained, and operated the B52D ASQ48 bombing system on the ground and during Vietnam combat missions.
Likewise he later served as a U.S. Army National Guard then U.S. Army Reserve combat medic; a military EMT and nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare instructor; a medical brigade mobilization officer then intelligence officer. The highlight of his military career was as the U.S. Army depleted Uranium Project director when he was recognized as the U.S. Army's expert on health and environmental effects of depleted uranium munitions on the battlefield. After his time in the U.S Air Force he earned his Bachelor of Science from Western Illinois University and then while serving in the U.S. Army Reserve and employed at the University of Illinois he earned his Master of Science and his Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Illinois. As a university scientist, military scientist, and as an assistant professor he combined unique vocational skills and academic knowledge with military experience to improve teaching and optimize research outcomes.
Outside of his primary career endeavors Dr. Rokke co-hosts a national radio program "Warrior Connection" on the Progressive radio network under Dr. Null. Civically, he volunteers his time with various community organizations including the Rantoul Public Library, Champaign-Urbana Astronomical Society, St. Elizabeth's church, the Regional Veterans Memorial committee, and the Rantoul Historical Society. Doug was a founding docent of the Chanute Air Museum. Mr. Rokke was also an elected member of the Chanute USAF Base Restoration Advisory board ensuring the health and safety of his community.
