In 2018, Betty Lou Brown Robinette was inducted into the Town of Wytheville Civic Monument, an honor she considers as the highlight of her career.
WYTHEVILLE, VA, July 31, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Betty Robinette has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Ms. Robinette is a retired registered nurse celebrating more than 40 years of service to her patients and community. Having drawn inspiration from her faith while deciding to enter the field of medicine, she earned a nursing diploma from Virginia Baptist Hospital in 1961, and began working at Highsmith Memorial Hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the next year. In 1962, Ms. Robinette became a supervisor and head nurse at the Clinch Valley Clinic and Hospital, departing in 1963 to join the nursing staff of the Bristol Memorial Hospital, where she would continue to practice for the next two years.
Ms. Robinette served as a school nurse for the Wythe County School Board 1966-1967 before starting what would become a three decade career with the Wythe County Community Hospital in 1972. Starting as a staff nurse, she became this hospital's first Infection Control Practitioner in 1976, receiving advance infection control training at the University of Virginia. She was responsible for starting the first Infection Control program for Wythe County Community Hospital. Employee Health Nurse in 1978 and Safety Officer in 1997 were added to Ms. Robinette's job duties, all continued until her retirement from Nursing in 2003.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Robinette has been recognized for her extensive service to the community of Wytheville, and in 2018, was inducted into the Town of Wytheville Civic Monument, an honor she considers as the highlight of her career. Active in the Wytheville Baptist Church for over 50 years, she established the church's Children's Clothing Closet in 2005, and would exercise her nonprofit development skills again in 2012, establishing the Wytheville Community Food Kitchen, which grew to become the Open Door Cafe, a pay-what-you-can donation restaurant. Among other accolades, she has been honored with a 2016 Distinguished Service Award from the Wytheville Morning Rotary Club, a 2017 Community Builders Award from the Wytheville Fraternal Order of Masons Lodge #82, and named a local Hero of Helping Overcome Poverty's Existence in 2018.
Ms. Robinette was active as member of the Association of Practitioners of Infection Control and the Southwest Virginia AIDS Coalition until her retirement from Nursing in 2003. She continues to dedicate her time to charitable work and expanding her collection of hand bells.
