Before joining Gottlieb & Janey, Mr. Janey gained valuable expertise as a partner with Quantum Point Partners LLC. Likewise, he was the head of strategy and executive vice president for Pali Capital between 2007 and 2011. During the late-1990s and mid-2000s, Mr. Janey honed his professional expertise in management, law and consulting with Garrison Group LLC, Navigant, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where he began his career as a law clerk.
Mr. Janey has represented a number of prominent clients throughout the course of his career. In addition to Craig Carton, the sports radio talk show host accused of effectuating a Ponzi scheme in 2018, Mr. Janey, along with his partner, in 2015, represented Galen Marsh, a Morgan Stanley financial adviser accused of stealing large portions of his employer's wealth management client data. In 2017, he represented Michael Klein, the former town attorney for Ramapo, New York, in an SEC enforcement action alleging, inter alia, fraud. Additionally, Mr. Janey's skill-sets have taken him to bankruptcy court where over the past several years he has regularly been retained by a bankruptcy trustee to serve as an outside general counsel in as many as 15 different cases and represented another trustee on behalf of a bankruptcy estate in a fraudulent conveyance case against multiple defendants.
In 1993, Mr. Janey earned a Bachelor of Arts in political theory from Kenyon College. Subsequently, he completed a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan's Law School in 1996. He was admitted to practice law through the New York State Bar Association, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of New York, the District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First and Second Circuits. Mr. Janey remains aware of changes in the field via his alignment with the New York State and American Bar Associations, the New York County Lawyers Association, the SIFMA Compliance & Legal Society and the Federal Bar Council.
Due to his considerable knowledge and vast experiences, Mr. Janey has contributed to a plethora of publications, including "The Odds Are Stacked Against Insider Trading Defendants," "Pleading Civil RICO: Lessons from the Abbott Litigation," "Broker Dealer Compliance in Era of Regulatory Pressures" and "Wiretaps and Fourth Amendment: Lessons from the Galleon Prosecutions." In recognition of his professional excellence, he was acknowledged in the Top 100 of National Black Lawyers in 2015 and named as a Super Lawyer Rising Star from each year since 2015. He was also listed among 22 Distinguished Leaders in the New York legal industry through the New York Law Journal in 2017.
