With nearly 40 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Patricks has excelled as a teacher of the English language and robotics at the Evangelical Grammar School of John Amos Comenius (Evanjelicke Gymnazium J.A. Komenskeho) in Kosice since 2019. Prior to this appointment, he worked at Hyde Park Middle School in Las Vegas in a number of capacities from 1998 until 2018, including as the chairperson for the science department, a coach for boys basketball, the chess club and head of robotics, and an advisor for the National Junior Honor Society. He previously served as a department chairperson and a science teacher with Saint Giles School in Oak Park, Illinois, between 1984 and 1998. Mr. Patricks began his career as a science teacher for Saint Pius X Parish in Stickney, Illinois, from 1981 to 1984.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Patricks pursued an education at Benedictine University, earning a Bachelor of Education in kindergarten to 12 grade education in 1981. He concluded his studies at the aforementioned university in 1984, graduating with a Master of Science in education and administration. Following these accomplishments, Mr. Patricks garnered certification as a national master teacher and a teacher in biology, chemistry, physics, algebra, calculus, English, social studies and robotics.
Beyond his primary responsibilities in the field, Mr. Patricks has participated in numerous endeavors within his professional circles. Since 2015, he has been active as the co-founder of the SkyBot Challenge for the first 3D robotic drone challenge for students in Las Vegas. He has further flourished as a team competitor in the VEX World Robotics Championship between 2011 and 2018. Moreover, Mr. Patricks had provided his wealth of knowledge to the Prince of Peace Church as the middle school youth director.
Furthermore, Mr. Patricks had contributed to the board of directors for Saint Mary of Celle, the Democratic Organization of Berwyn and the Saint Vincent de Paul Conference. A past commissioner for the Saint Mary of Celle Little League, he additionally held the position of a commissioner for the city of Berwyn from 1991 to 1997 and the North Berwyn Park District from 1995 to 1998. Mr. Patricks has also found much success in athletics, operating as the coach for Redrock Little League and a sponsor for both the Berwyn Blazers Football Club and the Berwyn Playground and Recreation Commission.
Mr. Patricks has been associated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He had maintained his involvement with the Knights of Columbus as a council member for nearly 35 years, a fourth degree assembly member for nearly 30 years, a former grand knight and a former district deputy. He was also affiliated with the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the National Catholic Educators Association. Likewise, Mr. Patricks was a member of the suburban parks and recreation division of the National Recreation and Park Association, the Illinois Sheriffs Association, the Illinois Association of Park Districts and the Berwyn Development Corporation.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Patricks has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Lauded as a event partner of VEX IQ and Vex EDR, he was recognized as the Knight of the Year by the Knights of Columbus in 2005, the Teacher of the Year by the state of Nevada in 2012 and the Slovakia Robotics Teacher of the Year by VEX Robotics in 2019 and 2020. For his exemplary work with the SkyBot Challenge, his team was presented with a Middle School Excellence Award annually between 2015 and 2018. Notably, Mr. Patricks was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
Inspired by the respect he held for his teachers, especially Mrs. Ellen Simmons and Mr. John Seno, Mr. Patricks has been motivated by the principle of becoming the type of teacher he would have wanted to have and that others would love to have in the classroom. He cites his interactions with former students, who celebrate his importance in their own lives and invite him to social gatherings, as the highlight of his exemplary career. He is also proud to have helped his school in Slovakia place 79th among nearly 9000 teams in robotics, having previously advanced his former school in Las Vegas to the number one spot in years past. Looking toward the future, Mr. Patricks hopes to enjoy his 40th year in the field of education while continuing to thrive in his robotics endeavors.
