A prominent figure in his community, Mr. Mathes has distinguished himself as the chairman of Mathes Brierre Architects (formerly The Mathes Group) since 2001. Aligned with his firm since 1969, when he first found success as the president and later as the principal, he has since served a key role in the development and growth of one of the oldest architectural firms in the country and the largest local firm in his area. Working nationally and internationally on dozens of projects over the years, he and his team members at Mathes Brierre provide a full range of services internationally, from architecture and interior design to landscape architecture, master planning and construction administration. The company's portfolio, including medical, retail and corporate facilities, likewise includes high-rise office and residential buildings, and civic architecture such as public and private schools, performance spaces in eighteen states and museums. Mr. Mathes formerly contributed for one year as an assistant to the managing architect at Rogers, Taliaferro, Kostritsky and Lamb in Baltimore before joining his firm.

Mr. Mathes has been involved in numerous high profile projects throughout his career including the expansion of The National World War II Museum in New Orleans, Place St. Charles, a 53 story office building in New Orleans, the U. S. Courthouse and Federal Office Building in New Orleans and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts which introduces high school students to art, music, data and cooking programs.

Involved in academia for over two decades, Mr. Mathes garnered a laudable reputation as a member of the president's council at Loyola University between 1989 and 1999, and has been a member of the business visiting committee since 2008. He formerly worked on the dean's advisory council in the College of the Arts at the University of Louisiana between 2004 and 2008.

Locally, Mr. Mathes has excelled on the board of the Alabama Contemporary Arts Center since 2008. He has held several positions with the American Red Cross from 1989 to 2007, where he was later awarded with a CEO's Award from the southeast Louisiana chapter and a Partnership Award. Additionally, Mr. Mathes was active on the board of directors of the City Park Improvement Association between 1996 and 2003 and as the president from 1993 until 1994.

Mr. Mathes received a Bachelor of Art in architecture at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1968. He then contributed for a year as the institute scholar at the American Institute of Architects in Washington, D.C., between 1968 and 1969. Mr. Mathes is a registered architect in 12 U.S. states, including Louisiana.

Aligned with several industry-related organizations, Mr. Mathes is a member and past president of the New Orleans chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He notably received several Honor Awards from the organization between 1982 and 2000. Mr. Mathes is also a member and past president of the Construction Industry Association, where he received an Honor Award in 1993, and is a member of the New Orleans Rotary Club.

Mr. Mathes' work has been published on numerous occasions and has received several accolades for his achievements. To wit, he earned a 2018 SPARK Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In 1962 he received an Honor Award for the Palestra at Newman School, in 1986 he received an Honor Award for the headquarters building for Pelican Homestead and Savings Association and in 1990 he received an Honor Award for Place St. Charles. In 2002 he received a Certificate of Recognition in Design Excellence form the National Organization of Minority Architects. He received two People's Choice Award, one in 2000 for the J. Edgar Monroe Library at Loyola University, and one in 1989 for the Communications, Music and Theater complex that he designed. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Mathes has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
