Dr. Emilio Bizzi has received numerous awards for his research and scholarship

Dr. Bizzi is a neuropsychologist and educator with more than 60 years of accomplishments. A graduate of the Sapienza University of Rome, he obtained a Doctor of Medicine, summa cum laude, in 1958. During his time in school, he developed an interest in the pathology of neurological diseases, and pursued postdoctoral coursework at the Institute of Medical Pathology at the University of Siena in Italy from 1958 to 1960 and at the Institute of Physiology of the University of Pisa from 1960 to 1963. In 1963, Dr. Bizzi immigrated to the United States to further continue his studies.
A research associate in the neurophysiological laboratory of the department of zoology at Washington University in St. Louis from 1963 to 1964, Dr. Bizzi became a visiting associate in the laboratory of clinical science at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1964 to 1966. In 1966, he began his 50 year tenure with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, first serving as a research associate before becoming an associate professor of neuropsychology from 1969 to 1972. Achieving the position of full professor in 1972, he was honored as a Eugene McDermott professor of brain sciences and human behavior at the institute from 1980 to 2002. Dr. Bizzi was also the director of Whitaker College and the chair of the department of brain and cognitive sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology between 1983 and 1997.
In 2002, Dr. Bizzi was named an institute professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a position he continues to hold to this day. He considers this to be his greatest career accomplishment due to the selectivity and exclusivity of the position. Alongside his primary endeavors, he has also served on the editorial boards for the Journal of Neurobiology, the Journal of Motor Behavior and the Brain Theory Newsletter. Furthermore, Dr. Bizzi has received numerous awards for his research and scholarship, including the 1992 Hermann von Helmholtz Award and the 1978 Alden Spencer Award from the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. He was President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences from 2006 and 2009. He maintains membership with the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine (National Academy of Medicine), Academy dei Lincei, and International Brain Research Organization.
