Dr. Woo is a professor emeritus in the department of electrical engineering at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. An accomplished researcher, Dr. Woo has conducted studies on robotics, artificial intelligence, intelligent control, digital control, digital signal processing and dynamic systems, among other areas in his field. His efforts have resulted in the contribution of over 50 articles in various international prestigious journals such as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions. Dr. Woo has also contributed more than 60 papers at international conference proceedings and eight book chapters. He is a senior member of the IEEE, and has served on the organization's control society and as a reviewer for numerous transactions. He is also a standing technical committee member of the International Association of Science and Technology for Development.
Dr. Woo was born in Shanghai, China in 1949. During his second year of high school, all universities in his country were closed due to the Cultural Revolution. As a result, he was sent to work at a factory, first as a mechanical and electrical technician for Analytical Instruments Company, then as an electrical technician for Shanghai Fourth Instruments Company. During this 10-year period, he also contributed as an English-French translator. In 1977, one year following the death of Mao Zedong, the Chinese communist revolutionary and the founder of the People's Republic of China, the country re-opened the universities. Dr. Woo was accepted to Fudan University, as a member of the first graduating class following the end of the Cultural Revolution, where he received a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1982. He then came to the U.S. in pursuit of graduate studies and earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering at Drexel University in 1983, and a Doctor of Philosophy in systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in 1988, at age 39. After acquiring his degrees, Dr. Woo became an assistant professor in 1988 at Northern Illinois University, was promoted to associate professor in 1994, and full professor in 2000.
