Inspired by many teachers throughout his primary education, Dr. Wynn decided to follow in their footsteps. After graduating from the Bronx High School of Science, he earned a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from the City College of New York, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Michigan. He accepted an appointment to the University of Michigan faculty at the rank of Instructor of Chemistry and taught there for one year before joining the Peace Corps.
Dr. Wynn was inspired to join the Peace Corps by President John F. Kennedy, and says he wanted to help others after receiving good fortune in his own life. He was also motivated by his father, a Polish immigrant who worked hard to adapt to the American way of life. He spent two years in Malaysia as Lecturer in Science Education at the Malayan Teachers College in Penang, where he taught chemistry, science education and philosophy of science.
Upon returning to the United States, Dr. Wynn was Professor of Physical Sciences at Oakland Community College in Michigan, where he was also Physical Science Department Head, Assistant to the Provost and Dean of Administrative Services. He subsequently served as Professor of Chemistry at Eastern Connecticut State University where he received the Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year Award. He taught there for nearly 40 years before retiring in 2017. He was also appointed Visiting Scholar at Wesleyan University. He also tutored students at the St. Nicholas School for the Blind, conducted in-service courses for Penang chemistry teachers, and was a Consultant in Chemistry to the Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Education in Mathematics and Science.
Dr. Wynn has published numerous articles about science and science education and lectured about these subjects in Malaysia, China, Canada, Australia, England, Puerto Rico and Russia. Since moving to Connecticut, Dr, Wynn has been involved in a variety of volunteer activities. He has been the Meet Director of the Windham Invitational Special Olympics Swim Meet for the past 25 years, President of the Greater Windham Unit of the American Cancer Society for two years, member of the Board of Directors of Camp Horizons, Inc., in South Windham for 17 years, three-term President of the Willimantic Lions Club, 20-year Volunteer Reader for the Connecticut Radio Information System (CRIS) for the Blind and Print Handicapped, eight year President of the Town of Columbia Saxton B. Little Free Library, creator and reader of Books on Parade, a weekly radio show on WILI-AM that introduces listeners to books on the New York Times Bestseller List, and Faculty Advisor of the Best Buddies student organization at Eastern Connecticut State University. He was also Resident Director of the Metropolitan Detroit YMCA camp in Oscoda, Michigan and a Suicide Hotline Crisis Intervention Councellor in Farmington, Michigan.
His volunteer activities have been recognized by a Ray of Sunshine Award from Mohegan Sun, Service to the Community Award from the Eastern Connecticut State University Foundation, Citizen of the Year Award from Willimantic Elks, Citizen of the Year Award from the Willimantic Rotary Club, Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award from Special Olympics Connecticut, 100% Club President Award from Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones Fellow Award from Lion Clubs International Foundation, Knight of the Blind Award from the Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation (CLERF), and Ambassador of Sight Award from the Lions Low Vision Centers of Connecticut.
