Having been aligned with Yeshiva University in New York since 2014, Dr. Abbott is an adjunct professor of the Wurzweiler School of Social Work. She initially entered the field in 1973, during which she first taught at Pennsylvania State University (PSU), after which she worked at Widener University, where she served as the director of social work and community psychology, a project director for its University Year for Action, and a project consultant for its Adult Competency Training Grant. During the course of her tenure, she also taught in the School of Social Work and was an associate dean of that school at Rutgers University, as well as a professor and program director in the graduate social work department at West Chester University.
During her illustrious career, Dr. Abbott enjoyed five years (1990-1995) as a faculty fellow of the US Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Administration. She has also published extensively in her field, having contributed more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, presentations, journal articles and books in her area of expertise. Likewise, Dr. Abbott has worked in the field as a psychology clinical coordinator at PSU, as a clinical social worker at Tidewater Mental Health Clinic, and as a private clinician.
An avid civic advocate, Dr. Abbott has provided her time and expertise to the National Junior Tennis League in Philadelphia as a tennis coach between 1974 and 1976. She was later active with the United Way on the budget review board and as the vice chairperson of the allocations committee between 1979 and 1986. Dr. Abbott has been a member of the board advisors for the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research at her alma mater, Bryn Mawr College, since 2013, where she has served as the co-chair since 2017. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees at St. Norbert College (2004-2007).
Dr. Abbott pursued her education at Saint Norbert College, receiving a Bachelor of Science in psychology in 1965. She later attained a Master of Science in Social work in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1977 as a National Institute of Mental Health fellow at Bryn Mawr College. Additionally, Dr. Abbott completed the HERS Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education at Bryn Mawr College during 1978. She is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Aligned with several professional organizations, Dr. Abbott most notably served in several key positions with the National Association of Social Workers, including as national president from 1993 to 1995. She is also an elected fellow of the American Orthopsychiatric Association and the College of Physicians in Philadelphia and a member of the Council on Social Work Education, the American Group Psychotherapy Association and, among others, the International Federal of Social Workers. Recognized with an Outstanding Alumna Award in Social Sciences from Saint Norbert College in 1986, Dr. Abbott was later named as the Social Worker of the Year by the Brandywine division of the National Association of Social Workers in 1996. Other recognitions to her credit have included a Distinguished Alumna Award from Bryn Mawr College's Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research in 2016 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Social Workers in 2017.
