ADELPHI, MD, August 28, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Diane M. T. North has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Born and reared in Washington, D.C., North's parents, Arthur E. and Ruth Gagnon Tarantino, gave her the opportunity to attend Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School (Class of 1962) and Trinity College (Class of 1966) where she obtained a B.A. in History. Growing up in the nation's capital, North enjoyed listening to Senate and House debates on Capitol Hill, visiting museums and art galleries, horseback riding in Rock Creek Park, and while in college, working part time for the American Political Science Association.
North attended the Cooperstown Graduate Program in History Museum Training and earned a M.A. degree from SUNY, Oneonta, in 1975. She worked for art and history museums and historic preservation agencies on the local, state, and national level including the National Portrait Gallery, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and the North Carolina Division of Archives and History. North earned a Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of California, Davis, in 2001, and has taught for the University of Maryland Global Campus since 2003. She has presented papers at numerous professional conferences including for the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the Western History Association, and the International Society for First World War Studies.
The University of Maryland Global Campus honored North with the Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence Award, Professional Achievements Awards, and a Teaching Recognition Award. She authored California at War: The State and the People during World War I (2018). Her other publications include a book on pre-territorial Arizona, and articles on the 1918-1920 influenza pandemic, civil liberties and the law, the demographics of an international frontier community, the Old Southwest, the history of cartography in the American West, and on teaching American Western history. North serves as an Editorial Board member of the scholarly journal, California History, and is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Association of University Women, American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, Western Association of Women Historians. She enjoys kayaking and hiking and is a Master Gardener and nature photographer.
