Accumulating 45 years to the field of nursing, Ms. Garrison retired in 2005. For much of her career, she was an employee of the A.B. Chandler Medical Center and Markey Cancer Center in Lexington as a nurse in the division of hematology and oncology and was appointed to the VA Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky, as a member of the clinical privileges staff, Cooper Drive division. A talented and diverse member of the health care community, she formerly worked for the Apheresis Laboratory in the department of oncology, college of medicine, as a supervisor, the University of Kentucky as a senior team leader of obstetrics and Saint Joseph Hospital as a staff nurse and acting charge nurse of obstetrics. Among her other noteworthy roles, Ms. Garrison provided her expertise as a consultant to oncology nurses at Adria Laboratories in Columbus, Ohio, and as a coordinator of cancer protocols for the Southwest Oncology Group. In academia, she was notably a curriculum consultant and lecturer at the Market Cancer Center at the University Kentucky and a visiting professor at Wyeth Ayerst.
Ms. Garrison is a professional member of several pertinent organizations in support of her career endeavors, including as the former director-at-large of the Oncology Nursing Society as a member of the Oncology Nursing Society. She has also been aligned with the American Cancer Society, where she has distinguished herself as a board director for the Kentucky division from 1991 to 1996, and has served as a member of the Cancer Action Network since 2017. Well regarded for her various contributions to the field, Ms. Garrison was awarded with a leadership vase and poinsettias by the Blue Grass oncology chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society in 2019.
Having read a wealth of nursing books while coming of age, Ms. Garrison hailed from a long family tradition of inimitable expertise in medicine, and felt inspired to continue along that path. After graduating from Paris High School in Paris, Kentucky, in 1957, she prepared for her career by earning a diploma at Saint Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Lexington in 1960. She later attained a Bachelor of Science in professional arts at Saint Joseph College in 1991. Eminently qualified in her field, Ms. Garrison is a retired registered nurse in Kentucky and a post certified oncology nurse.
