In a career suffused with highlights, Gene Collins Jr. has been most proud of the positive impact he has had on his students during times of difficulty.
PORTSMOUTH, OH, September 10, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gene Collins Jr. has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. With a Bachelor of Science in social science from Shawnee State University, Mr. Collins launched his career as an assistant coach for 18 years at the college level. He was subsequently hired as an assistant coach at his alma mater and after one year was promoted to the position of a head coach. Distinguishing himself through his work with the boys' varsity basketball team at Portsmouth High School for the past dozen years, Mr. Collins has completely revitalized the program which suffered its worst record for a decade in school history. Most notably, he led his teams to the second winningest decade in school history. Mr. Collins guided back to back teams to the Ohio State Tournament in 2011 and 2012. His team finished as division 3 state runner-up.
As a demonstrated leader, Mr. Collins has earned distinction for his coaching abilities throughout his career. In addition to being named as the Coach of the Year of the State by Associated Press, he was likewise recognized as the District 14 Coach of the Year for several years, League Coach of the Year and the Southeast Conference Coach of the Year. He also received the Home Team Award from Shawnee State University. In a career suffused with highlights, Mr. Collins has been most proud of the positive impact he has had on his students during times of difficulty. He has attributed his professional success to the support he has received from his staff, as well as the students for whom he served.
Civically, Mr. Collins spends much of his time fundraising for his high school basketball program and volunteering at the local community center and at juvenile justice court systems. Looking toward the future, he hopes to establish a Boys and Girls Club in his community in order to better serve the nearly 2,000 youth in the area. Mr. Collins hopes that a club would allow children to properly deal with mental health issues and became involved in respectable trades for their futures.
