Dr. Wahli is a Swiss biologist, researcher and educator with a career spanning five decades of outstanding innovation in his discipline. He holds a teacher's diploma from the Ecole Normale d'Instituteurs of Porrentruy and taught at the Primary School of Corcelles for three years before enrolling in the University of Berne to study biological sciences. He graduated in 1975 with a Diplôme de Biologiste, and in 1977 was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in biology, summa cum laude, for his thesis on genetic factors in the African clawed frog. From 1977 until 1980, Dr. Wahli was a postdoctoral fellow and visiting research associate to the Carnegie Institution department of embryology (Baltimore), the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute (Bethesda), funded by fellowship awards from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss Academy of Sciences and the Fogarty International Center (NIH).
In 1980, Dr. Wahli returned to Switzerland, where he assumed the directorship of the Institute of Animal Biology at the University of Lausanne, in addition to a full professorship. He would remain active as the director until 2002, and held a variety of leadership roles during his tenure, including a term as the president of the department of biology and service as the university vice-rector. Dr. Wahli established the Center for Integrative Genomics at the University of Lausanne in 2002, acting as its founding director, and continued to teach within the department until 2011, when he was granted professor emeritus status.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wahli's research focus broadened to include work on metabolic disease, nutrition and extensive inquiry into the effects and mechanisms of specific lipid-activated nuclear receptors in healing and disease processes. As one of the world's leading authorities in his unique cross-disciplinary field of study, he has advised for numerous policy and research organizations, including the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Fondation Louis Jeantet, the Swiss Council for Science and Technology and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, among many others. He is a former president of the Nestle Foundation for the Study of Problems of Nutrition in the World, and a member of the Asia Roundtable on Food Innovation for Improved Nutrition. Since 2012, Dr. Wahli has been a professor of metabolic disease, and since 2019 a visiting professor, at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, a joint venture of the Nanyang Technological University Singapore and the Imperial College of London.
Dr. Wahli is the recipient of numerous awards, accolades and grants for his career innovations in nutrition and metabolic sciences. In addition to securing more than $50 million in grant funds since 2010, he has been presented with the 2002 Otto Naegeli Prize, the 2008 Hartmann Muller Prize, the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award, Faculty of Biology and Medicine, University of Lausanne, and the 2013 Chaire d'Excellence Pierre de Fermat, Région Midi-Pyrénées, Toulouse, among many others. Dr. Wahli holds several patents for developments in micronutrition and lipid metabolism. His research has been extensively published in international journals, and he has served on the editorial boards of more than a dozen publications, including Molecular Endocrinology, Metabolites, Cell & Biosciences, and the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. As one of the world's foremost experts in his specialty, Dr. Wahli maintains active membership in numerous academic and professional organizations, including the Endocrine Society, the Académie Suisse des Sciences Naturelles and the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids, and he has been elected to the Institut Jurassien des Sciences, des Lettres, et des Arts, the European Molecular Biology Organization and the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences.
