Celebrating over 60 years in her field, Ms. Moser has garnered a laudable reputation as a biochemist. Beginning her career as a technician at Harvard University in Dr. Konrad Bloch's research laboratory, she subsequently served in the same capacity for several local hospitals in Massachusetts and, in 1976, was hired by the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore. Beginning as a senior technician, Ms. Moser continually progressed, distinguishing herself as a longtime research associate of neurology from 1991 until 2017. She is presently an associate professor emerita of neurology at Johns Hopkins and the Kennedy Krieger Institute and the co-director of the Peroxisomal Diseases Laboratory in the Hugo W. Moser Research Institute on campus.
After graduating from college, Ms. Moser was hired as a technician by Dr. Hugo W. Moser to study disorders of the brain. Little did she know at the time, but she and Dr. Moser would develop a tight bond and eventually marry. Over the next four decades, the two investigated lipid metabolism in inborn errors of metabolism. Their research team also developed, tested and validated the methodology for the newborn screening of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, ALD, by LC-MS/MS by using punches from Guthrie blood spot cards. In 2015, ALD newborn screening was added to the national newborn screening program. Some of Ms. Moser's other studies have involved the development of diagnostic tests for ALD a deadly genetic brain disease that destroys myelin, as well as therapies for the disease.
An alumnus of Radcliffe College, Ms. Moser received a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry in 1961. She has disseminated many of her research findings by contributed articles in various professional journals, including the American Journal of Human Genetics and Molecular Genetics and Metabolism. Ms. Moser also co-authored a chapter in the 1991 text, "The Metabolic Basis of Inherited Disease, Techniques in Diagnostic Human Biochemical Genetics." Born and raised in Massachusetts, Ms. Moser enjoyed serving her community as a member of her church choir at University Baptist Church in Baltimore from 1984 to 1990. She was also on the music committee between 1986 and 1990. She has served on the scientific advisory boards for the United Leukodystrophy Foundation, the Global Foundation for Peroxisomal Disorders, and as a board member for the Bach Concert Series in Baltimore from 2010 until 2016. Ms. Moser has been a member of several professional societies including the American Society for Neurochemistry, and the American Society of Human Genetics. She is also a member of the League of Women Voters.
In 1999, Ms. Moser was gratified when, "Neurochemical Research," Volume 24, Issue Four, was dedicated to her and her husband. She was also the recipient of a Biomarker Award in 2014 and an ALD Community Award in 2015 from ALD Connect and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Krieger Institute in 2016. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Moser has been included in the 64th edition of Who's Who in America and the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
