Dr. Halloran is an esteemed professor of mathematics and textbook author with nearly 50 years of expertise in developing curriculum and instructional strategies for K-8 students. He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from Worcester State College in 1963, and began his career teaching for Springfield Public Schools, where he was hired to teach both mathematics and science courses. After discovering that the school lacked both a science laboratory and the equipment needed to run his curriculum, he transitioned to teaching exclusively mathematics. Dr. Halloran continued his education in support of his new specialty, obtaining a Master of Liberal Arts in mathematics at Wesleyan University in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics education at the University of Connecticut in 1976.
In 1970, Dr. Halloran was appointed as the director of mathematics education for Springfield Public Schools, and departed from classroom teaching to design and administer curriculum for the aforementioned district. After garnering a reputation for innovative instructional design and impressive student outcomes, he was recruited by Merrill Publishing Company to join a team of six scholars and educators writing the Merrill Mathematics series of K-8 textbooks. Published from 1982 until 1991, the series was wildly popular with schools and educators, accruing a 1985 Outstanding Elementary School Textbook Award and becoming the second best-selling mathematics curriculum on the market in 1989 and 1990.
Dr. Halloran departed the Merrill Mathematics project and Springfield Public Schools in 1991 to become a professor of mathematical sciences at Central Connecticut State University, for which he excelled as the chair of the mathematics department for three years. In addition to his tenure at Central Connecticut State University, he was active for five years on the adjunct faculty in the Graduate School at the University of Connecticut. He additionally serves on the Barr Smith Scholarship Committee, which distributes over $20 million dollars annually to academically-deserving students, and as a member of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics, the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in Connecticut. In recognition of his dedication to shaping the next generation of mathematics educators, Dr. Halloran was a Finalist for The Excellence in Teaching Award from Central Connecticut State University, and his curriculum was honored as the Best Mathematical Program Education Series in the Country in 1996.
