Smith has been included in Marquis Who's Who for his work as a corporate communications strategist, tactician and leader who fosters positive change. After graduating from Baylor University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Art in journalism, Mr. Smith worked as a print journalist in Texas and California for several years with the objective of impartially giving readers the necessary facts and context to establish their own informed points of view. In the early 1990s, he shifted his career into corporate communications to serve as a constructive advocate for businesses.
In 1996, Mr. Smith became Director of Public Affairs and Communications for GTE Hawaiian Tel, where he secured corporate funding that established the Hispanic Center of Hawaii. He also served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii.
In early 2000, Mr. Smith joined Texas Instruments (TI) in Dallas, Texas, as director of executive communications, where he wrote the Nobel Prize in Physics lecture that Jack Kilby presented to the Nobel Academy in December 2000. Mr. Smith considers his assistance to Mr. Kilby as one of his most fulfilling professional accomplishments. Subsequently, he produced two CEO keynotes for TI at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
In 2005, Mr. Smith returned to Hawaii as vice president of corporate communications for Hawaiian Telcom, which had recently been privatized. Mr. Smith then became senior director of corporate communications at PAETEC Holding Corporation, a national business telecommunications provider that has since been absorbed by Windstream Communications.
In 2009 and continuing through 2016, Mr. Smith was a strategic communications consultant assisting clients of Public Strategies Inc. and Hill+Knowlton Strategies. He later served as vice president of public relations for Academic Partnerships. He maintains a strategic communications consultancy, Wordsmith.Services, while devoting his full time and attention to NTT DATA Corporation, where he works as strategic communications advisor for the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Marketing Officer in North America.
Among professional recognitions, two of Mr. Smith's works were published in a compilation entitled 80 Top CEO Speeches. In Hawaii, he accepted the Governor's Kilohana Award for Outstanding Volunteer on behalf of his company, and his work on the video series "Hawaii: A High-Tech Paradise" earned a Gold Award from a national association for economic development. A separate project received a Bronze Telly Award for Non-Broadcast Video.
