Drawing upon a decade of metallurgical expertise, Mr. Douglas excels as the vice president of research and development for FLSmidth. Since 2019, he has maintained oversight of research, development and innovation in mining, from product development to wear and aftermarket solutions, and managed a team of 80 employees. Before obtaining his current role, he served FLSmidth as its director of process technology for the Minerals Testing & Research Center. Between 2016 and 2019, Mr. Douglas supervised global offerings on base, precious and industrial mineral process optimization and led a team of 55 professionals in pilot operations and analytical services.
During an earlier stage of his career, Mr. Douglas garnered valuable expertise in a variety of metallurgical services. Occupying several roles of increasing responsibility, he served as a metallurgical engineer, senior research metallurgist and chief metallurgist with the Barrick Gold Corporation. From 2010 until 2015, Mr. Douglas built the foundation on which he now stands, managing a range of different industry professionals that were responsible for engineering support for an 18,000 TPD roaster, 15,000 TPD pressure oxidation plant and a large research and development metallurgical laboratory.
Prior to obtaining his first professional role in 2006, Mr. Douglas earned a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, where he received a Master of Science four years later. He maintains his professional alignment with the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Outside of his work, Mr. Douglas contributes to those less fortunate by donating to scholarship funds.
With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Mr. Douglas has contributed to a variety of publications and conferences. In light of his outstanding body of work, he received an Outstanding Recent Graduate Award through the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 2017.
