With an entrepreneurial, independent spirit, TeShayla Coates ran her own event planning business throughout college. When she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in public relations from Wayne State University, she wanted to put her degree to use at a respectable agency in the industry. However, she found it difficult to break into the field as a beginner and decided to take a job in the banking industry. Ms. Coates eventually landed a role as a public relations coordinator for a local school district. While there, she was able to learn a lot about marketing and web design. From there, she established her own business, Coates Communications, of which she currently serves as president.
In addition to her primary work, Ms. Coates also serves as a board member of the Detroit Association of Black Organizations and Renaissance Villages and founder and chief executive officer of Blacme. Within six months of creating Blacme, she was recognized as having the most empowering clothing brand in the United States by Lux Life Magazine. Over the years, Ms. Coates has used her ambition to gain expertise in communications, business development and event planning. She is especially skilled in recruiting, training and mentoring professionals toward success. She has also become adept at branding and creating unique brands that drive engagement. She has attributed her professional success to her faith. Ms. Coates maintains professional affiliation with the National Association of Black Journalists. Ultimately, Ms. Coates hopes to inspire others to be successful and create the life they want to live. Looking toward the future, she plans to continue on her current path to success.
