Throughout her career, Dr. Begali has also gained valuable expertise in the field with medical and psychological practices such as Dominion Behavioral Healthcare, Cumberland Hospital, Sheltering Arms Physical Rehabilitation Center, and the University of Virginia Children's Rehabilitation Center.
In a career suffused with highlights, Dr. Begali finds it difficult to pick one that stands out among the rest. However, she is proud to have served a variety of persons with multiple medical and neurological conditions and to have authored a number of publications, including "Capacity assessment: Clinicolegal, psychosocial, and ethical caveats," "Neuropsychology and the dementia spectrum: Differential diagnosis, clinical management and forensic utility," "Head injury in Children and Adolescents: A Resource and Review for School and Allied Professionals" and "Psychotherapy following acquired brain injury." She has been the guest editor for an International Journal, NeuroRehabilitation on the topic of "Neuropsychological and psychological applications in neurorehabilitation." She was invited by local attorneys to produce a live webcast: "Neuropsychology in medico legal applications: A How to guide for attorneys."
Prior to obtaining her first professional role, Dr. Begali earned a Bachelor of Science in special education and a Master of Science in special education for individuals with multiple handicaps from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in 1974 and 1976, respectively. She subsequently became an educational specialist in school psychology and received a Doctor of Psychology degree in clinical psychology from James Madison University during the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. More recently, Dr. Begali earned two post-doctoral board certifications, one from the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology and the second from the American Board of Professional Psychology.
A seasoned expert in the field, Dr. Begali aligns herself with the American Psychological Association, the International Neuropsychological Society, the National Academy of Neuropsychology, the Sports Neuropsychology Society, the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology, the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology and the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Driven to contribute to her community, she frequently lends her expertise to serve on national professional committees, as mentor and supervisor for developing professionals, and others in a pro bono capacity. In recognition of her outstanding accomplishments, she was nominated as the Best Teacher of the Year in 1982 and awarded Psychologist of the Year by VASP in 1990. Looking toward the future, Dr. Begali intends to provide one-on-one work and begin to increase her focus on professional writing and publication.
