She holds an Associate of Arts from Mars Hill College and concluded her education at Wake Forest University, after which she became an award-winning student athlete before earning a Bachelor of Science in 1957 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1962. Dr. Guth completed her medical internship and anesthesiology residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and returned to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center as an anesthesiology instructor in 1965.
Renowned for her practice as an anesthesiologist, Dr. Guth is a past president of the California Society of Anesthesiology, and was presented with their Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her outstanding career accomplishments. Throughout the course of her career, she held several administrative leadership roles in the Mills-Peninsula Health Systems, including two terms of service on the board of directors of Mills Hospital and the Mills-Peninsula Medical Center. She is a former instructor at Radboud University, and has served as a member of the American Council on Science and Health Board of Science and Policy Advisors since 1995. Dr. Guth's practice focused on general wellness and lifestyle medicine, with an emphasis on pain management techniques that do not rely on the use of opioids, and she is a supporter of published research on the benefits of low EMF on stem cells.
Well regarded for her indelible contributions to the field, Dr. Guth is the founder of the Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine, as well as the inaugural supporter of the Endowed Chair in Complementary and Integrative Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where she remains active on the board of visitors. Likewise, she is prolifically active in varied alumni and support activities for Wake Forest Baptist University, a past president of the Medical Alumni Association, a sponsor of the University's women's golf and basketball scholarships and a former member of the Wake Forest University Deacon's Club board of directors, who presented her with a 2010 Deacon Club Member of the Year Award and 2018 Loyal Deacon Award for her service.
