Gunter with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Gunter celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Having earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus in the department of philosophy and religion studies at the University of North Texas after more than four decades, Dr. Gunter retired from the field of education in 2010. A distinguished teacher and celebrated mentor to many students and colleagues throughout his tenure, he was most notably responsible for founding and serving as the chairperson of the department. Prior to his commitments at the University of North Texas, Dr. Gunter held faculty appointments at the University of Tennessee and Auburn University between 1963 and 1969. Among his other noteworthy roles, he served as a consultant for Oak Ridge Associated Universities.

Heavily involved in environmentalism throughout the course of his career, Dr. Gunter was instrumental in the creation of the Big Thicket National Preserve. Notable for being a heavily forested area of the southeast region of Texas, the Preserve was designed in 1974 to protect the land and the habitats that surround it. Dr. Gunter also had the opportunity to serve as a senior fellow at the American Institute for Cultural and Philosophical Thought in Illinois during his tenure in academia, an organization that encourages the study of philosophical and cultural thought in America.

A prolific author, Dr. Gunter has published multiple non-fiction books, including several series on the Big Thicket. He is also known to be among the first philosophers to write about philosophy in the environment. Some of Dr. Gunter's books include "Creativity in George Herbert Mead," "Texas Land Ethics" and "Bergson and Modern Thought: Towards a Unified Science" in 2016. He also published a novel, "River in Dry Grass." Dr. Gunter has contributed to numerous scholarly journals as a writer, editorial board member and reviewer, and has been the assistant editor for the Temple Big Thicket Book Series since 2002.

Throughout much of the late 1960s and into the late 1980s, Dr. Gunter served his local community as the chairperson of the Big Thicket Coordinating Committee and as a member of the Lieutenant Governors Citizens Commission on Water Resources and the Citizens Committee for Coastal Zone Management. He also served on the board of directors of For the People Inc. Affiliated with several industry-related organizations to support his career, Dr. Gunter served as the president of the Southwestern Philosophical Society, the North Texas Philosophical Association, the Association for Process Philosophy of Education and the Big Thicket Association. He is a board director of the Conservation Alliance, a board member of the Big Thicket Natural Heritage Trust and chairperson of the board of directors of the Foundation of Philosophy of Creativity. Other memberships include the Philosophical Society of Texas, the Society Amis de Bergson and the American Philosophical Association. He was the recipient of the Big Thicket Association's R.E. Jackson Conservation Achievement Award in 2005.

Dr. Gunter pursued an education at the University of Texas where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1958. He subsequently earned a second Bachelor of Arts at the University of Cambridge in England in 1960 as a Marshal Scholar and a Doctor of Philosophy at the prestigious Yale University in 1963. Moreover, Dr. Gunter was acknowledged in 2017 as a Texas Land Conservatory Conservation Hero. He was previously recognized with a Contributor Award from the Society for Constructivism in Human Sciences in 2005, a Book Award from the San Antonio Conservation Society in 1998 and a Special Service Award from the Lone Star Sierra Club in 1997 for his contributions to the Big Thicket.
