Dr. Beyer-Mears is a retired professor of ophthalmology and physiology celebrating a career spanning more than five decades. After graduating from Vassar College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1963, she accepted a prestigious two-year fellowship with the National Institutes of Health at the Cornell University Weill-Cornell Medical Center. She subsequently began teaching physiology at the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in 1967, departing in 1971 to pursue postgraduate study at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Beyer-Mears completed a Master of Science in 1973, and began doctoral coursework and a teaching assistantship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey the following year.
From 1978 until 1980, Dr. Beyer-Mears undertook a second fellowship with the National Institutes of Health, during which time she was based in the ophthalmology department of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She became an assistant professor of ophthalmology in 1979, adding Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology in 1980. In 1986, Dr. Beyer-Mears was appointed as an associate professor of both ophthalmology and physiology, positions she held until her retirement. In addition to her work with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, she was a visiting associate professor of vision science and ophthalmology at the University of Wisconsin, and a consultant for Novartis AG, formerly Alcon Laboratories.
Dr. Beyer-Mears has contributed research articles on diabetic lens & kidney therapy, published in professional journals. She is a grantee of the Pfizer Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, as well as a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, and the recipient of research awards from the National Institutes of Health and the Foundation for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Moreover, Dr. Beyer-Mears has held leadership roles in the congregations of Christ Church and Saint Bartholomew Episcopal Church for more than two decades.
Dr. Beyer-Mears is the owner of the Eugene A. Gilmore House, a 1908 building by Frank Lloyd Wright that has been in her family since the 1930s. In 2007, the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy awarded her their Wright Spirit Award for her work on the restoration of the property. As a leading voice in her field of research, Dr. Beyer-Mears remains affiliated with numerous professional associations, including the American Physiological Society, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and the International Society for Eye Research.
