Having accrued more than 40 years of inimitable expertise in the field of clinical psychology, Dr. Ward garnered a lauded reputation as a staff psychologist for Acadia Hospital in Bangor between 1998 and her retirement from the field in 2020. Specializing in adult psychological evaluations, particularly in regards to psychiatric diagnostic clarification, she initially joined the hospital staff as a psychiatric clinician in 1992. She previously distinguished herself as a staff psychologist with the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center, formerly known as the Bangor Mental Health Institute, from 1983 to 1991. Throughout the earlier years of her professional journey from 1978 until 1982, Dr. Ward became well-versed in the intricacies of the field in numerous positions at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, the Syracuse University Counseling Center, the West Haven VA Medical Center and the Neuropsychology Laboratory of the Hutchings Psychiatric Center in Syracuse, New York.
Outside of her primary career path, Dr. Ward worked as a consultant psychologist with the Greater Bangor Area Crisis Stabilization Service from 1995 until 1998. During her initial forays into clinical psychology, she was appointed as a fellow of the U.S. Public Health Service between 1976 and 1978.
A dedicated advocate on behalf of education, Dr. Ward continues to serve as a coordinator for a statewide high school awards program for over 120 schools in Maine under the auspices of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Maine. She has mentored over 25 undergraduate and graduate psychology students hoping to follow her example. She also was an instructor for third-year medical students pursuing their psychiatric clerkships from 2001-2010 at Acadia Hospital. Likewise, she is a steadfast supporter of the Simpson Memorial Library in Carmel, Maine, having earned distinction as its president between 2009 and 2016, among other positions of high leadership. Dr. Ward was involved as the co-chairperson for the "Proud of Our Past – Building Our Future" capital campaign from 2013 to 1015, which enabled expansion and renovation of the existing structure of the library. In 2018, Dr. Ward endowed two scholarships at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor, Maine. Going forward, each year two students are receiving scholarships to assist them with college expenses.
Dr. Ward was drawn to her profession out of a desire to follow the example of her father, Donald J. Elliott, who had developed an indelible talent as a school psychologist specializing in students with learning disabilities. Her academic efforts began at Binghamton University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, with honors, in 1976. Following this accomplishment, she transferred to Syracuse University, where she obtained a Master of Science in clinical psychology in 1978 and a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology in 1983. Expertly qualified in her field, Dr. Ward has been licensed to practice psychology in the state of Maine.
As a commitment to her field, Dr. Ward has been active with several organizations pertinent to her area of expertise. She has been a dedicated member of the honor society of Phi Beta Kappa, having been elected as the vice president and chairperson of the academic achievement awards program of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Maine, as well as the state representative of Maine to the organization's triennial meeting on two occasions. Moreover, Dr. Ward is a member of the Maine Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association.
In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Ward is particularly proud to have remained in close communication with several of her former students, many of whom have since secured prosperous careers in their own right. As an educator, she was recognized for her excellence in teaching by Tufts University School of Medicine from 2002 until 2003. Outside of her professional circles, Dr. Ward enjoys such diversions as collecting seashells, planting flowers in her garden and creating beautiful works of art.
