Dr. Taylor is a prominent physician who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology, with a particular focus on gynecologic oncology. In 2012, he was named as the Richard N. and Louise Crockett professor emeritus at the University of Virginia, following more than 35 years on campus. Dr. Taylor also retired his clinical practice in 2011, where he spent decades treating patients.
Dr. Taylor's tenure at the University of Virginia began as an associate professor and the founding director of the division of gynecologic oncology health science between 1981 and 1987, and later as the medical director of the cancer center from 1996 to 2008. He was also afforded the opportunity to serve as a deputy medical director of the cancer center from 2008 until 2011. Dr. Taylor originally joined the faculty staff in 1976 as an assistant professor, and subsequently took a brief hiatus from 1979 to 1981 to teach and serve as a senior scientist of the Cancer Center at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
Some of Dr. Taylor's other noteworthy commitments have included serving as the medical director of the Telecolposcopy Program and as a member of the Gyn Oncology Tumor Board. He was also a visiting fellow of gynecology and oncology at the Norwegian Radium Hospital in Oslo, Norway, in 1973, 1996 and 1997, held numerous advisory and consulting roles, and, in retirement, devoted six years to conducting studies related to the early detection of cervical cancer at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in Moshi, Tanzania, between 2012 and 2018. Dr. Taylor continues to consult for various surgical training programs.
Throughout the course of his extensive career, Dr. Taylor researched HPV genotyping in Northern Tanzania, East Africa. He has disseminated much of his findings by authoring scholarly articles in multiple different medical journals, and by speaking at conferences and symposia. In 2002, Dr. Taylor notably had the pleasure to serve as the 100th anniversary guest speaker on behalf of Alpha Omega Alpha's Alabama chapter.
Dr. Taylor's civic commitments currently include service on the board of directors of the Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, Virginia, since 2017. He has served in the same capacity for Operation Bootstrap Africa (OBA) in Minneapolis since 2017. OBA is a nonprofit organization that collaborates with communities in Tanzania, Kenya and Madagascar to improve education and health care, among other services.
An alumnus of the University of Alabama, Dr. Taylor received a Bachelor of Science in 1963 and a Master of Science in 1968. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine at the Medical College of Alabama in 1968. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship and residency at the University of Virginia Hospital and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Virginia. Additionally, Dr. Taylor served for two years with the U.S. Public Health Service at the National Cancer Institute within the surgery branch in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1970 to 1972, in lieu of a military draft. He is board certified in obstetrics, gynecology and in gynecological oncology by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Taylor is an elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Among other industry-related organizations, he is aligned as a member of the Southern Surgical Association, the International Gynecological Cancer Society, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Society of Gynecological Oncologists. Recognized by multiple professional organizations for his outstanding contributions to the field, Dr. Taylor received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association in 2000 and an Award for International Service to Underserved International Communities from the America College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 2015.
