Dr. Federman is an atomic, molecular, and astrophysicist and researcher celebrating retirement after more than 40 years of innovation in his field. After earning a Bachelor of Science from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, he continued his education at New York University, where he was awarded a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy. Dr. Federman's interest in astrophysics was sparked by his doctoral research, leading to a career focus on spectroscopy and the physical environments of interstellar gas clouds.
While completing his doctoral studies, Dr. Federman worked as a senior research technician at the Hospital for Special Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center. From 1979 until 1982, he pursued postdoctoral fellowships at New York University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he would remain active as a lecturer for an additional year. Throughout the mid-1980s, Dr. Federman was a National Research Council Associate and technical staff member at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, departing to become a member of the faculty at the University of Toledo. Beginning as an assistant professor in 1988, he rose to become an associate professor in 1993 and a full professor in 1998. He was granted professor emeritus status in 2018.
Dr. Federman has contributed numerous articles, abstracts, and scientific papers to various professional journals. Likewise, he is the former scientific editor of the Astrophysical Journal and a former technical editor of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy for the Journal of the Optical Society of America B. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Physical Society as well as a Senior Member of the Optical Society, and has held leadership roles in the American Astronomical Society and the International Astronomical Union. Dr. Federman attributes his success to hard work and the ability to solve difficult problems, and looks forward to spending the next several years traveling for both research purposes and pleasure.
