For more than 45 years, Mr. Stern has distinguished himself as an attorney and policy consultant specializing in civil rights cases, criminal defense, personal injury and family law. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Carthage College in 1969 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Marquette University in 1974. Eminently qualified in his field, Mr. Stern was admitted to practice law by the state bar of Wisconsin the same year, and has argued cases before the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Stern contributed throughout the first decade of his career in private practice, becoming a senior partner of Joling Rizzo Willems Stern & Burroughs in 1982 and Caviali & Stern in 1985. He returned to private practice in 1991, and consolidated his legal and policy consulting work into the office of Walter W. Stern, Attorney at Law, in 2007. Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Stern county vice-president for the National Alliance of Mentally Ill, where he continues to provide counsel.
In addition to his work in the courtroom, Mr. Stern fostered the development of the next generation of criminal justice professionals as a lecturer in criminal law at Carthage College, where he taught for nearly three decades. He was a candidate for Circuit Court Judge in 2005, and has been elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. In accounting for his success, Mr. Stern credits his tenacity and generational focus on civil rights and opportunities for economic advancement. Enjoying his retirement, he indulges in such avocations as outdoorsmanship, running and yoga. Mr. Stern hopes to return to teaching within five years, and perhaps lecture on social science.
