Prof. Faye-Ellen Silverman, DMA, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Dr. Silverman celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Currently serving as a faculty member of the Juilliard School's evening division and an adjunct assistant professor of music history at New York University (NYU) in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, Dr. Silverman has garnered a laudable reputation as a talented musician and educator. Outside of her primary responsibilities, she teaches music privately to aspiring students. Dr. Silverman's extensive career in academia over the past five decades has included appointments in the school of professional studies at NYU, Eugene Lang College at the New School, the Mannes School of Music at the New School, the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, among other institutions. Additionally, she has lectured abroad at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Poland.

At the age of 13, Dr. Silverman was the recipient of the Parents League Competition for her musical composition. Receiving national recognition, she later played a rendition of the piece at Carnegie Hall in New York and appeared on the Sonny Fox Wonderama television show. By the time she entered her 20s, Dr. Silverman had become closely affiliated with the Seesaw Music Corporation, which continued publishing her compositions until 2006, whereupon it was acquired by the Subito Music Corporation.

Dr. Silverman has published approximately 100 works, including for orchestra, chorus, large ensembles and chamber music, as well as a Jewish themed opera. She has recorded for Radio Cologne, performed at the International Festival of Experimental Music in Bourges and at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and was a soloist for the Brooklyn Philharmonic in New York. Dr. Silverman has also been a guest composer and visiting composer both locally and abroad and has received numerous commissions. A published composer since she was 24, she produced several CDs, including two on Albany Records, "Manhattan Stories" and "Transatlantic Tales." Her first recording, "Oboe-sthenics," was notably released through Finnadar-Atlantic.

A talented writer, Dr. Silverman has contributed articles and record reviews to various professional publications such as the Baltimore Sun. She also wrote a section of the 1982 book, "Schirmer History of Music," which serves as a musical history reference. Locally, Dr. Silverman has been instrumental as a board member of the New York Women Composers. She was a founding member of the Music Under Construction, as well as a founding board member and former composer-in-residence with the International Women's Brass Conference. She has been active with the Board of the International Women's Brass Conference ever since its founding. She is am currently Secretary of the Board of New York Women Composers.

Dr. Silverman's parents, who first noticed her interest in music, enrolled her at the Dalcroze School of Music in New York City at the age of four. Quickly advancing, she began writing her own music, studying piano, the clarinet and the viola, and began learning from other musicians and composers. Dr. Silverman studied at the aforementioned school between 1951 and 1963, and subsequently attended the Manhattan School of Music from 1963 until 1964. She spent her junior year of college at the Mannes College of Music and ultimately earned a Bachelor of Arts in music at Barnard College, cum laude, in 1968, a Master of Arts at Harvard University in 1971 and a Doctor of Musical Arts at Columbia University in 1974.

Securing several Meet the Composer grants and an American Music Center grant during the course of her career, Dr. Silverman was also a Yaddo fellow in New York, a MacDowell fellow in New Hampshire, and a Virginia Center for the Creative Arts fellow in Amherst, Virginia. Additionally, she was a resident scholar at the Villa Serbelloni and Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Italy, a resident artist at the Fundación Valparaíso in Spain and at the VCCA-France, and a Composers' Conference fellow in Massachusetts. Among her many awards, the Faye-Ellen Silverman Day was named in Dr. Silverman's honor in 1982 in Baltimore by the mayor. She has since been bestowed with a Biennial Music Award from the National League of American Pen Women, has been the recipient of several Standard Awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, and won the Indiana State Composition Contest.
