Now retired, Ms. Baer distinguished herself in the field of education for more than four decades. After nearly 10 years as a public school teacher in New Mexico and Colorado, where she taught reading, secondary language development and English for grades kindergarten-12, she transitioned into academia in 1985. Hired as a faculty program director for ABE, GED, basic skills and developmental studies at Lamar Community College, Ms. Baer later served as a coordinator and teacher of the education services and post-secondary enrollment options, as well as teaching faculty from 2000 to 2007. She subsequently returned to the public school system, where she spent 12 years in the classroom at Granada Public Schools in Granada, Colorado, teaching high school English, until 2018. Other academic appointments to her credit have included positions as an adjunct instructor at Regis University and Adams State College.
To better serve her field, Ms. Baer has excelled as a judges' coordinator for the Southeast Colorado State Fair in Lamar since 1988. She has also been an advisory board member for the Academy Advancement Program in Lamar since 1993 and a committee member for Kids Kollege since 1995. Passionate in her pursuit of public service, Ms. Baer has also been prolifically active in the town of Lamar, presently working as a reader for the Southeast Colorado Knowledge Bowl and a member of the Southeast Colorado Transition Governing Board. Moreover, she has served as the chairperson for the Children's Church and as a member of the Hispanic Council since 1996.
Ms. Baer received a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education at Adams State College in 1975, followed by a Master of Arts in education in 1976. Eminently qualified, she holds a license to teach for grades K-12 in the state of Colorado.
Furthermore, Ms. Baer has been affiliated as a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association for Developmental Educators and the Colorado Association for Developmental Educators. She is also a recording secretary of Delta Kappa Gamma and a member of Phi Delta Kappa. Well regarded for her indelible contributions, Ms. Baer has been awarded two Teacher of the Year Awards.
When asked what advice she would those aspiring to work in education, she responded, "It is not easy and at times frustrating but, in the end, the rewards are far greater than those 'brick walls'.
