Having earned distinction as a senior research scientist in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder, Dr. King joined the faculty in 2008 after a long and successful career in the field. Currently, he is focused on conducting research in meteorology and remote sensing. He also serves as the science team leader of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). In this capacity, Dr. King conducts cloud remote sensing, which is used on the Terra and Aqua satellites.
Renowned for his tremendous expertise, Dr. King began working for the Goddard Space Flight Center shortly after completing graduate school in 1978 as a physical scientist at NASA. He subsequently became project scientist for the scientific research satellite, Earth Radiation Budget Experiment, from 1983 to 1992. He was later promoted to the position of senior project scientist for NASA's Earth Observing System between 1992 and 2008. Additionally, Dr. King gained recognition in academia as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland and Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, as a visiting professor at the University of Washington and as a faculty fellow at the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study at Texas A&M University.
Dr. King's research specialties have been focused on satellite remote sensing, inversion methods in remote sensing of tropospheric aerosols, bidirectional reflectance properties of natural surfaces, and airborne and spaceborne optical sensors. In disseminating his research findings, he has contributed over 100 scholarly papers in refereed journals and 26 book chapters. He also contributed six books as an editor, including "Our Changing Planet: The View from Space." Dr. King had the opportunity to present the Michael King Maniac Lecture in July 2013 as well, which was titled "From a Love of Nature to a World of Earth Observations."
Elected by his peers as a fellow of the American Meteorological Society, Dr. King successfully led the organization as the chairperson of the committee on atmospheric radiation between 1986 and 1988 and was later acknowledged with a Verner E. Suomi Award in 2000. He is also a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Long dedicated to his community, Dr. King enjoyed working with the youth as a Webelos den leader with the Cub Scouts of America in Silver Spring, Maryland, and as the chairperson of the troop leaders committee for the Boy Scouts of America. Likewise, he was active as the chairperson of the board of directors for the Unitarian Universalist Church in Adelphi, Maryland.
Dr. King pursued an education at Colorado College, attaining a Bachelor of Arts in physics, magna cum laude, in 1971. Shortly thereafter, he received a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in atmospheric sciences at the University of Arizona in 1973 and 1977, respectively. Among his numerous accolades, he received an Exceptional Service Medal in 1985, an Exceptional Science Achievement Medal in 1992 and an Outstanding Leadership Medal in 2002 from NASA. Other recognitions include the William Nordberg Memorial Award from the Goddard Space Flight Center in 2001 and the Pecora Award for Terra Satellite from the U.S. Department of Interior/NASA in 2019. Additionally, Dr. King received an honorary doctorate from Colorado College in 1995.
