Douglas M. Levin, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Esteemed for his decades of professional experience, Dr. Levin pursued a formal education before embarking upon his professional path. He initially earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Harvard University in 1965. Dr. Levin eventually concluded his studies at New York University in 1969, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine.

Dr. Levin began his career as an intern at the Yale–New Haven Hospital from 1969 to 1970. He later completed a residency in internal medicine at the aforementioned hospital between 1970 and 1971. Dr. Levin subsequently served as a clinical associate with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland from 1971 to 1974.

During this time, Dr. Levin advanced to the rank of lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service. Following these appointments, he worked as a fellow in gastroenterology at the University of Chicago from 1974 to 1976. Moreover, Dr. Levin was recruited to the Board of Health in Upper Arlington, Ohio from 1979 to 1983.

Dr. Levin was additionally active with the Columbus Society for Internal Medicine in a number of capacities, including as the program chairman from 1979 to 1980, the secretary-treasurer in 1981, the vice president from 1981 to 1982 and the president from 1983 to 1984. Dr. Levin further flourished as a gastroenterologist at Columbus Medical Center in Ohio between 1976 and 1990. From 1990 to 2008 he was a partner with Columbus Medical Gastroenterology. From 2008 until his retirement in 2019, he served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He now volunteers for The MAVEN Project.

As a testament to his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Levin has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. Initially receiving a scholarship from New York University in 1967, he was presented with a Citizenship Award from New York University and the Alpha Omega Alpha Prize in 1969. Featured in the first edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Health in 1996, he was also recognized as a fellow of the American Gastroenterology Association, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Medical Association. Recently, Dr. Levin accepted Teaching Awards from the Ohio State University in 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2019, achievements that he considers among the highlights of his career.

Certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Levin has found success in numerous endeavors beyond his primary responsibilities in the field. A former assistant professor at the Ohio State University, he has contributed to the section of gastroenterology at the Riverside Methodist Hospital, the Mount Carmel Hospital and the Ohio State University Hospitals. Dr. Levin has also held a position on the membership board at the Jewish Center of Columbus.

Dr. Levin has been affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including the American Gastrointestinal Association, the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease and Alpha Omega Alpha. Likewise, he has maintained his involvement with the Phillips Brooks House Association as a host and a long-term contributor. Dr. Levin has provided his wealth of knowledge to articles published in myriad medical journals.

Having discovered his innate talent for science and communication, Dr. Levin emphasizes the importance of maintaining his professionalism and remembering why had entered the field of medicine in the first place. He has been notably influenced by Anthony Fauci with the National Institutes of Health as well as James Boyer, Louis Landsberg, Gerald Claskin and Harold Conn at Yale University. Continuing to practice in the years to come, Dr. Levin is incredibly proud to have possibly been the oldest person to become certified before the hepatology transplant board at the age of 66.
