Mr. Bartels is a career educator, game designer and entrepreneur celebrating more than four decades of creativity and service to his students. Since 2017, he has dedicated himself to his work at the Early College Academy, a dropout prevention-focused alternative high school serving students aged 15 to 21. For the last 41 years, he has taught science at the middle and high school levels for Columbus City Schools, earning a reputation for patient and innovative instructional strategies and a strong ability to deliver material to diverse groups of learners.
Mr. Bartels' interest in teaching was sparked by his parents, who were both educators. He enrolled at The Ohio State University to study geology, but soon added education coursework, and completed a Bachelor of Science in education in 1980. Mr. Bartels completed his education at Ohio Dominican University with a Master of Science in curriculum development in 2011. He considers his patience and ability to build rapport with students to be the keys to his success and a crucial step in helping empower students to take an active role in guiding their educational futures.
In addition to being a pillar of the local school community, Mr. Bartels is an award-winning tabletop roleplaying game designer best known for "The Fifth Cycle," published in 1990. Since 1987, he has been a partner in The GuardTower, a chain of two Columbus-area game stores focused on tabletop strategy, role playing, war games and trading card games. He is a member of the Game Manufacturer's Association of America, and his work has been included in major critical discussions of games design and development. Within five years, Mr. Bartels hopes to begin transitioning into retirement, with goals to open a new gaming company and continue developing new titles.
