Professor Kurmis studied initially at the University of Southern Australia, where he received a Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Radiations in 1997 and a Bachelor of Medical Radiations (Honours) in 1998. He later earned a combined Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery, with Honours, at Flinders University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Orthopaedic Surgery at the same institution in 2003. He subsequently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy at Melbourne University in 2009. Furthermore, he completed advanced specialty training in orthopaedic surgery (RACS) and international fellowship training in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty in Vancouver, Canada. Additionally, Professor Kurmis has been certified in Small Business Management through Flinders University since 2002. He also received a Diploma and certification in Independent Medical Examination through the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners in 2017.
Elected by his peers, Professor Kurmis is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Australian Orthopedic Association, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. To further support his professional standing, he is also aligned with several other national and international industry-related organizations. These include prominent professional bodies such as the International Society for Computer-Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery, the International Society for Computer Aided Surgery, the Australian Knee Society, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the Canadian Arthroplasty Society, the Australasian Orthopaedic Trauma Society, the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association, and the Australian & New Zealand Orthopaedic Research Society.
Well-recognized for his accomplishments in the field, Professor Kurmis is the current (2020) Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Gordon Trinca medalist (a highly prestigious distinguished career achievement award), a two-time recipient of the Richard T. Southwood Memorial Orthopaedic Prize (2005, 2008), a former winner of the RACS Justin Miller medal (2017), and recipient of the highly prestigious 2017 Frank Stinchfield Prize from the international Hip Society (awarded at the 2017 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meeting in San Diego, USA). In 2008 he was also bestowed the Flinders University Medal. Between 2019 and 2020, he also accepted several CEO Healthcare Awards and was named as the Australian Private Practice Orthopedic Surgeon of the Year.
