Dr. Spivak is a textile and standards engineer and professor emeritus at the University of Maryland. Devoting more than 30 years to academia, he first served as an assistant professor at Philadelphia University (now known as Thomas Jefferson University) in 1968 before accepting an opportunity at the University of Maryland in 1970. While in Maryland, he held the roles of assistant, associate and full professor and chaired the fire protection engineering department for eight years beginning in 1993. He since became a professor emeritus in 2001.
In addition to his academic career, Dr. Spivak has consulted for the U.S.-Saudi Arabian Joint Committee for Economic Cooperation in Washington, DC, and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. He was a senior standards analyst for the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Maryland, chaired the International Organization for Standardization/Consumer Policy Committee in Geneva, Switzerland, was a special assistant to the U.S. General Services Administration and served as an expert witness in his field.
Dr. Spivak has conducted research in fiber, apparel and textile flammability, performance, care and maintenance of textile furnishings, and standardization. He has also examined international and government standards policy, consumer product standards and fire safety, cleaning science research and technology, and fire safety engineering. Dr. Spivak has contributed over 50 articles to various scholarly journals, including the Textile Research Journal, the Journal of Applied Fire Science, and Fire Technology, and has written more than 300 monthly articles on technical topics for Cleaning and Restoration Magazine. He was the co-author of "Standardization Essentials" in 2001 and the co-editor of "A Sourcebook on Standards Information" in 1991.
An elected fellow and chartered textile technologist of the Textile Institute, Dr. Spivak is also an elected fellow of the Society for Standards Professionals and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. He is a longstanding member and former two-time board of directors member of the American National Standards Institute, member and past president of the Fiber Society, and member of the American Society of Safety Professionals.
Honored twice by ASTM International, Dr. Spivak first received a William T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award in 2001, followed by a Margaret Dana Award in 2003. He also received a Leo B. Moore Medal from the Society for Standards Professionals in 1997, an Academy of Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1996, and a George S. Wham Leadership Medal from the American National Standards Institute in 1992.
First earning a Bachelor of Science in textile engineering from Thomas Jefferson University in 1963, Dr. Spivak then completed a Master of Science in textiles at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1965 and a Doctor of Philosophy in polymer and fiber science/material science at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom in 1967. He is a certified textile technologist and was featured in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, the sixth edition of Who's Who in American Education, and the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
