Ms. Miller celebrates a 50-year career in nursing, with an emphasis on geriatric care and research in the management of secondary conditions. Since childhood, she dreamed of entering medicine, and earned a diploma in nursing from Baptist Memorial Hospital in 1963. Ms. Miller continued her education at the University of Tennessee, where she would complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in nursing, and pursued postgraduate coursework at Vanderbilt University.
During the early 1980s, Ms. Miller began her career with the Veterans Affairs Hospital of Memphis, Tennessee, as a staff nurse, where she rose to become a clinical specialist in 1986, and a patient health education coordinator in 1988. She transitioned into geriatric nursing practice in 1995, where she would continue to focus until her clinical retirement in 2008. Ms. Miller is a certified health education specialist and certified geriatric nurse practitioner.
Ms. Miller is most proud to have published her research on the management of pressure sores. She was invited to present her findings at an international nursing conference, and has been a contributor to numerous other scientific papers and journal articles. Throughout her career, she has been presented with such accolades as a West Tennessee Outstanding Scientific Professional Employee Award, an Administrator's Award for Excellence in Nursing, and has been named among the 11 Top Nurses by Shelby and Fayette Counties. Ms. Miller is the past president of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, Beta Theta Chapter, and a board member of the Tennessee Nurses Association. In her retirement, she is active in literacy outreach initiatives, and continues her 25 year tenure as a volunteer on behalf of the Orpheum Theater.
